WHO ARE WE?
One of the first Landcare groups in Northern NSW, Jiggi Catchment Landcare Group (JCLG) membership covers a broad geographic range including Jiggi, Georgica, Mountain Top, Goolmangar and Larnook.
We look at the big picture when planning projects - working in close partnership with the local community, other Landcare groups, local and state government and wildlife organisations. Our aim is to restore and enhance wildlife habitat and establish connectivity beyond the confines of our catchment.
COMMUNITY
JCLG began in 1992 by restoring the Jiggi School grounds - converting an ex horse paddock and seriously degraded stream bank into a healthy ecosystem and outdoor classroom now home to two threatened species. Many volunteer hours have been dedicated to working with pupils in the years since to enhance the conservation values of the school grounds.
The group works closely with the local community, aiming to increase their skills and knowledge regarding all aspects of natural area restoration. Many enjoyable and informative workshops and field days are held.
FUNDING
Successful funding continues to come our way and major environmental achievements are now happening on local member’s properties. JCLG members committed to environmental restoration have the luxury of working with funded professional bush regenerators to help them achieve their goals.
Jiggi Catchment Landcare Group continues to succeed in sourcing funds to undertake natural area restoration work for their catchment and partners. More than $850,000 from a variety of sources over the past seven years has been received to restore remnant vegetation on private & public land. Other funding applications are pending.
LANDCARE EXPANDING HIGH CONSERVATION VALUE HABITATS & CORRIDORS 2016-2025
Jiggi Catchment Landcare has formed a consortium of private and public land managers and with funding from the NSW Environmental Trust ($550,912) will undertake natural area restoration works to restore corridor connectivity over a 10 year period.
The project involves professional bush regenerators, working alongside Landcare members, to ensure the protection & enhancement of high conservation value vegetation that links key habitat for threatened species. There are 22 sites included, these are located within local & regional priority corridors. The project will provide assistance to four committed & established Landcare groups (Whian Whian, Caniaba, Tuntable Creek, Mackellar Range & Jiggi) & their members as well as public land managers Rous Water and NSW NPWS (Muckleewee & Bungabee Nature Reserves).
Restoration work will serve to strengthen species migration pathways and will create fauna refuges while re-establishing linear corridors. Environmental weeds including Lantana, are degrading native plant communities limiting natural regeneration. The capacity of landcare members & the community to manage sites will be enhanced through training in restoration techniques and by working alongside professional bush regenerators. Local school children & the community will learn about the biodiversity value of their local bush and how they can protect it.
